She Put A Record On: An Interview With Gudrun Gut

Published on March 30th, 2009 in: Feminism, Interviews, Issues, Music |

Popshifter: Now for some not so serious questions. You have this affinity with aquatic subject matter . . . oceans. . . a fish called Monika. . . kaltes klares water. . . are you an Aquarius, or perhaps a Pisces?

Gudrun Gut: No, I’m a Taurus! But I need to be close to water to make me feel good . . . that has been said.

Popshifter: Has anyone ever told you (besides myself) that you look like both Joan Crawford and Faye Dunaway, but NOT like Mommie Dearest?

Gudrun Gut: Ha! Yes! Strange thing . . . some people told me, but I don’t think I look so much like them . . . BUT, I’m more flattered than offended!

Popshifter: I read that you recently got your driver’s license. Did you always know how to drive, or did you just learn how?

Gudrun Gut: In Berlin I never needed a car . . . the public transport is quite good.

Popshifter: I also read that you said you don’t have a personal life . . . is that due to not having any time or no interest in having one (or the fact your career pretty encompasses all of your interests)? You have some emotionally honest and vulnerable lyrics on I Put A Record On . . . I hope those desires you speak of aren’t falling on deaf ears! Does the lovely Ms. Gut have a happy “partnership” with someone outside of her career?

Gudrun Gut: Ha! Yes . . . I am in a very happy long-term relationship!

Popshifter: Have you tried to quit smoking? If so, how long did you last?

Gudrun Gut: Oh yes. I did stop for two years . . . then started again. . . and now on the 1st of January, I stopped again. Still suffering . . .

Popshifter: Favorite colors, cuisine, flowers, perfumes, and cosmetics?

Gudrun Gut:

Colors: rose, grey, black, blue
Cuisine: Spaghetti Vongole, and Mule et Frites
Flowers: roses, lilies, poppies, snowdrops
Perfume: Prada
Cosmetics: Weleda, Clinique, and Helena Rubenstein.

Popshifter: Dogs or Cats? Red or White wine? Cake or Ice Cream?

Gudrun Gut: Cats . . . red wine . . . no ice cream.

Popshifter: Finally . . . list your top albums of 2008!

Gudrun Gut: Oh . . . no Top Ten this year. My favorite album of the year was the new 4 Women No Cry album on Monika . . . was great to work on it, and I still love to listen to it.

[…] webzine is now live, wherein love’s given up for Lux Interior (RIP), Berlin’s mighty Gudrun Gut, not too mention smells of every size shape n color. And don’t miss my own bit about EMERSON […]

[…] Bettina Köster’s Queen of Noise might not be my favorite album, but it certainly falls into the realm of the type of album I just described. It just kicks ass, and continues to kick ass! (I apologize for my lowbrow description, but I guess it sort of brings the cave-girl out of me!) I mean, seriously; when something just rocks your lame ass, you know it instantly. For those who don’t know who Bettina Köster is, she is the ex-vocalist of the German all-girl band of awesomeness from the early ’80s known as Malaria! (I previously interviewed the other ringleader, Gudrun Gut, on Popshifter, so you can read that as a historical reference point). […]
