I was a little miffed that Dario Cueto had so little involvement in last week’s episode of Lucha Underground, because a week without El Jefe is like a summer day without sunshine. Fortunately, a familiar face popped up during last Sunday’s Important Televised Sporting Event (featuring Beyoncé).
I’m surprised that he didn’t reveal that the 2017 Prius can only be won in a battle royal.
Well hi there, Believers! We’re back at the Temple for episode two of the season.
We open on a recap of Mil Muertes’s victory over Prince Puma from last season, as well as a recap of the scene from the finale where Black Lotus killed her trainer, Dragon Azteca, and joined up with Dario Cueto. We also see the end of last week’s show, where Pentagon, Jr. broke the arm of Lucha Underground Champion, Mil Muertes.
A Brilliant Young Mind, sadly changed from its far-superior UK title, X + Y, is a film that shows how much a fairly overdone concept can be elevated with outstanding performances, very thoughtful casting, and an intriguing directorial vision. It’s not the most innovative piece in the world, but for the kind of sentimental comfort food it’s aiming to be, it’s satisfying and even moving. Should you watch this movie? I think you should.
We’re back, folks! The second season of Lucha Underground is underway and it’s going to be darker than ever.
The most cursory viewing of Radu Muntean’s One Floor Below reveals a very banal, uninteresting portrayal of a man who does nothing, and frankly, that’s the point. Examining the Romanian thriller beneath the surface, however, provokes some hard questions about what it means to exist in society and the responsibility we have to each other in times of tragedy and danger.

Despite creating poetry and spoken-word performances since 1995 and steadily releasing music since his 2001 album Amethyst Rock Star, there’s a consistent rawness and openness in Saul Williams’ work that’s much more typical of someone in an earlier stage of their artistic career. That’s not a knock on Williams at all; in fact, quite the opposite. Successful artists of every sort have a way of closing up and playing things a lot safer as their careers wear on, often to avoid offending the powerful and influential friends they’ve made over the years, or just to maintain a steady stream of guaranteed income. Artists like Williams have an incendiary freeness, a kind of nothing-to-lose sensibility, that allows them to take their projects down lesser-used and unique avenues. This is something that Williams has always been able to tap into, most recently on his new album, MartyrLoserKing.
