Lost & Never Found Again: 1982 Rolling Stones Concert T-Shirt

When I turned 21, my friends threw me a big party. It was a slightly muggy Memorial Day weekend, but we all had a blast and a half spending the evening on the decorated carport. Lots of music, snacks, and of course, booze-to-the-max! My mom had dropped by earlier in the day to drop off lots of delicious snacks that she had made for the party. She also brought a special gift for me from my stepdad Garry.

It was a Rolling Stones T-shirt from 1982. Garry was a paramedic and often took jobs at arena concerts. One of the ongoing perks was a concert tee made just for the paramedics. He had kept them all. I’d had my eye on the Rolling Stones shirt ever since my mom had shown it to me years before. It was yellow, had the Rolling Stones tongue logo on the front, and the word MEDICAL in black across the shoulders on the back. I was so excited that he had given it to me and it was instantly my favorite shirt.

In a match made in rock & roll girls heaven, the wonderful Nikki Corvette and Gore Gore Girls’ guitarist/leading lady Amy Gore have teamed up to form an ultra-fun little Detroit super group called Gorevette. Along with Lianna Castillo on bass and Al King on drums, Gorvette have just released their seven-song debut EP, Lustfully Yours.

The Accidental Terrorist: Scary Songs Which Aren’t Meant To Be Scary

In our last Halloween issue, we discussed morbid melodies and the music of the scares. But what of songs which horrify us accidentally? Some argue that songwriters who pair dark lyrics and bright melodies know exactly what they’re doing, but what about words and music which cause fright when they were only intended to delight?

For example, a few of our readers noted that “Mama” by Genesis was a bit squicky, but it’s unclear whether that creepiness was intentional or not. However, I think we can all assume that “Beep Beep” by The Playmates was probably not meant to panic small children, although it obviously has, judging on some of the replies we received.

One Crazy Summer With Garbo’s Daughter

It’s been a few months since we’ve been graced with a Popcast from Garbo’s Daughter, and it just wasn’t the same around here without them. Their in-depth knowledge and genuine love of music is always a treat to witness.

But they’ve been super busy! Since last time we heard from them, they’ve played lots of shows and recorded a brand new song called “Summer’s Gone,” which we are proud to feature first right here at Popshifter. They will also have a 4-song cassette released on Burger Records later this year, so keep checking the band’s MySpace page for details.

They also haven’t lost their magic touch in picking the best songs you’ve never heard. In this issue’s summerfull Popcast, the three ladies from Garbo’s Daughter discuss their favorite summer songs and why they love them so much. A Conversation With The Cowsills

Susan, Paul, and Bob Cowsill

The Cowsills are one of the foremost musical families in pop history. Brothers Barry, Bill, Bob, and John formed the group in 1965. Joined by their mother, Barbara (a.k.a. “Mini-Mom”), they recorded their self-titled debut album in 1967 and achieved their first hit, “The Rain, The Park and Other Things” (#2). A short time later, brother Paul and sister Susan (the youngest Cowsill) rounded out the lineup. With unparalleled harmonies soaring above an infectious bubblegum beat, The Cowsills went on to release a slew of LPs and singles, including the top ten hits “Indian Lake” (#10, 1968) and “Hair” (#2, 1969), and served as the inspiration for the popular television show The Partridge Family before disbanding in 1972.
