Top Five Ticket Stubs

Like many hardcore fangirls, I collect memorabilia relating to my obsessions. I try to remain unfazed by the remarkable similarities between my collector habits and those of serial killers, and concentrate instead on the tenacity of spirit that such pack-rat-edness surely exemplifies.

There are many bands and movies I’ve seen more than once. Now I’ll take you on a pictorial journey through my favorite collections of multiple ticket stubs.

Talk Derby To Me

Published on November 29th, 2007 in: Uncategorized |

By Laura L.

If you were to tell my twelve-year-old self that in my mid-twenties I would be participating in a local roller derby league, I would have responded with: (1) “What’s roller derby?” and (2) an eye-roll, not necessarily in that order. Having been born in a time in which roller derby was at a down point, to put it lightly, I did not become familiar with the sport until a few years ago, when the modern roller derby revival had cropped up in Chicago and an acquaintance of mine took part in it. While today’s derby may have a punk, DIY edge to it, it did not start that way.

Top Five New Year’s Pop Culture Resolutions

Published on November 29th, 2007 in: Issues, Top Five Lists |

It’s the start of a brand new year. Everything is fresh, untainted, golden. You can change your life! You can change the world!

At least that’s what we convince ourselves will happen. Truth is, the pressure of living up to your own outlandish expectations often means that the only things you’ll change at the start of a new year are your sheets.

Here are some New Year’s Resolutions we might actually stick to.

“Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, a creature was stirring. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, but it was hard to say that St. Nick would be there. A Christmas of another color brings a killer on the loose.”

Won’t Someone Please Think of the Children?: Tiny Tim’s Christmas Album

By Hanna

The first reaction most people have when confronted with the reality of Tiny Tim, in song and especially video form, is “That’s the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.” Or simply speechless horror. Imagine my glee when I found out he’d made a Christmas album. Fun for traumatizing all the family!

Kris Kringle Konfessions

I admit it: I’m old enough to remember (and can now say somewhat unashamedly with the distance of years) when I actually found myself praying—praying—for the complete Welcome Back, Kotter action figures. What did I know? Could I fathom that Travolta would one day be riding the hot rails toward Scientology? Or that Boom-Boom Washington would not pass gracefully into the eighties? Only TV could make a squalid, inner-city school look so attractive, to a Catholic-school kid like me wearing the obligatory monkey-suit every day.

More fun than reindeer
should be allowed to have.

Fear not: this is no paean to the 2000 movie with Charlize Theron and Ben Affleck woefully miscast as two-timing criminal lovers. This is a tribute to a storied family tradition, one involving bizarre rituals and the relentless search for functioning batteries.

Band Names Are A Con: The Flaming Lips

Published on November 29th, 2007 in: Issues, Music |

By Adam McIntyre

Grunge wasn’t weird enough for us. I mean, the awesome rock power of those hairy flannel people was a little hard to deny but really, they were making music for someone else. My friends and I had backwoods families, didn’t use drugs, and had absolutely nothing to do. We were fifteen. It was more likely that we’d break into someone’s house to use the phone than steal something.
