Bill Fay released two albums, one in 1970 and the other in 1971, before disappearing into the wind like so many artists have done over the years. Virtually erased from musical history, Fay’s work has since been resurrected, along with his drive to create new music. His second album since his 2012 return, Who Is The Sender? is a reminder that even musicians with his immense caliber of talent are able to slip through the cracks every once in a while.

With that said, it’s difficult to summarize Bill Fay as a musician. At his core, he is a folk singer-songwriter, but there is so much more to this wonderful poet. Fay is a fearless creator and Who Is The Sender? is a prime example. If there were any mental or obligatory musical chains restraining Fay in the past, they have completely disintegrated. As somber as the music sounds, it still feels like some sort of liberation of the soul.

For some, Who Is The Sender? may be too much of the same thing. There is little variation from song to song, and regrettably, the album may become tiresome. But for those who enjoy heartfelt poetry, this album is as close to a masterpiece as you’re going to get. The beautiful collaboration between Fay’s voice and piano playing, along with the captivating orchestra work, make Who Is The Sender? commanding and powerful.

While at first glance it may seem generic and unimaginative, the album’s cover art is actually a perfect representation of the music it showcases. A sepia-toned photograph of Fay at a piano appropriately sets the story straight as to which instruments are the focal point of the album, and what the overall tone of it will be.

Bill Fay is not a rock star, a celebrity, or even an icon; he is a humble, yet confident songwriter that refuses to conform to musical structure and routine. His music is nearly impossible to not respect, considering the place it came from: his painfully honest heart. When listening to Who Is The Sender?, it’s easy to become mesmerized by the simplicity it presents, and by its righteous nature. Once lost, Bill Fay is a musical treasure who has resurfaced and thankfully, has since been found.

Who Is The Sender? was released on April 28 through Dead Oceans.
