DVD Review: President Wolfman

Ambitious. That is the word that constantly comes to mind when trying to describe President Wolfman.

The idea, voices, script, and music are the only original things in this film; the footage is not. Yeah? Yup. President Wolfman is completely comprised of public domain footage from movies, commercials, and whatever else the filmmakers they could get their hands on. This sounds impossible but they did it. What is even more impressive is that there is so much crazy shit out there they were able to make a film in which the President is bitten by a werewolf and goes on a killing rampage.

Upon receiving the DVD I didn’t expect much, but Wild Eye Releasing is a company that I trust. I’ve reviewed their last couple of releases and really liked them so my hopes were not at the bottom. Yes, I did say “wow” out loud when I read the movie synopsis, but it didn’t make me want to watch because it didn’t sound like it would be that good. Ambitious? Yes, but not good.

President Wolfman is mostly a political satire. It includes other elements, but overall, it’s a comedy that’s actually pretty funny and ridiculous. I usually watch a film once and then write a review but I actually watched this one twice because I didn’t want to miss anything. There are countless one-liners and small comedic moments that can be easily missed on one viewing. Just keep in mind this isn’t one big statement of political satire. I know that can turn many away from these films because we are submerged in it on a daily basis in real life.

Please give President Wolfman a shot and if you are not into it in the first few minutes you probably won’t end up liking it. This film isn’t for everyone—hell, no film is for everyone—but it is one that requires a certain type of taste to enjoy.
