Doctor Ew Presents Gadzooks At The Imperial Pub!

From the photo on his MySpace page and the rather suggestive name you might think Doctor Ew is a goofy tribute to Doctor Demento. Nope, try again.
Doctor Ew is the new musical persona of Drew Smith (of The Bicycles). If you’re familiar with that band, then you probably already know and love Smith’s vocal style. If not, you should be and you’re in for a treat; his voice is full of warm fuzzies, like a far less intense Elliott Smith.
Yet for all the sweetness, there is definitely silliness, too. Song titles like “I’m Getting Fat” bear this out (and you’re missing out on a great tune if you let the title scare you away). Smith can also cut loose and rock hard, as is proven by “The House Of Many Mansions.” Then there’s the Monkees-esque, “No More Space” which is guaranteed to stick in your head.
Those of you in the Toronto area are in luck; Doctor Ew is having a record release party for his new album Gadzooks from Fuzzy Logic Recordings. The magic happens tonight at the Imperial Pub. The show will also feature The Pinecones and Steven McKay.
Still not convinced? Listen to the tunes on Doctor Ew’s MySpace page and read this hilarious interview with Smith on the 50 River Concerts website (scroll down for a bit and you’ll see it).
