Peter Godwin: Then through a tango dancing friend, Daniele Mercanti, I met Amanecer Sierra, his flatmate, who had heard some Nuevo work-in-progress. Daniele is a good friend, worked together with the wonderful Ogy Ego in creating the Nuevo website—and Daniele is also a very talented film-maker—so we’re thinking to make a film together for Nuevo. Well, Amanecer liked the music and Daniele told me she could really sing.

I liked the idea of a female vocal element, choirs, back-ups, improvisations, maybe a duet. . . was half looking for that. When I heard Amanecer’s extraordinary voice I was blown away. It was such a happy accident.

She’s on eight of the ten tracks, including the duet “Milonga Moon.” And she has a rainbow voice of so many colors, with different soulful feels, such a unique talent. She’s studying opera in Rome at the moment, but she’s an important part of the chemistry of the Nuevo sound, we’ll definitely make more Nuevo records with her whatever other musical adventures she’s on.

Finally, one word about that notion of the “maturing artist,” you raise in your question. The reason I said, at the beginning of this answer, that I’m always trying to make the same album in a way connects to this notion I have that, on a deeper level, I have always had the same core beliefs, the same yearnings, the same questions, the same dreams, and loved a lot of the same stories. I mean, since I was 15.

And I always wanted to keep that central spirit and way of looking at and experiencing life alive in myself, let alone in my work. Experience adds to the story but for me, rarely contradicts it.

Or maybe I was just born an “old soul”!
