Dublin on A Dime
Published on January 30th, 2010 in: Issues, Kiss Me I'm Irish, Travel |Tip #1: Get some cost effective lodgings in the city center.
For it to be effective, you have to get a place to stay in the center of the city, because airport buses take you into the bulls-eye of the action. Sure, the city is a tourist trap, but you can get around on foot or public transit quite easily. From the airport, it costs about five euros on the public air shuttles, which is a lot cheaper than a cab or a car rental! From there, it’s quite easy to figure out where stuff is. And always have a map: in fact, most hotels have free maps in their lobbies. (Alternately, while you’re at the airport, find the tourist office there; they have tons of useful stuff!)
I stayed at the Arlington Hotel on Bachelor’s Walk, which was about as central as it gets. One little perk we got with our place was the free Irish Step-Dance performances in the hotel bar, as well as the free traditional musicians performing nightly. (NOTE: If you do stay in the city center, get a hotel up on the highest floor; therefore the noise is more muted, and you can get a good night’s rest which you’ll need if you plan on doing a lot in a short period of time).
Tip #2: Find a place you can store luggage until you can officially check in to your hotel, as most places don’t have check in until 2 p.m.
Seek out a place that you can email and ask ahead of time, because email is FREE!
What’s great about Dublin is that it’s very compact, so walking is a great option to getting around. When you look at a city map, it appears vast, but it really isn’t. So, with walking and taking transit, you’ve just saved yourself lots of money right there!
