London Triad, 1987: Sigue Sigue Sputnik, The The, Fuzzbox

Twenty-two years ago I was in my freshman year of college, and my friend Mark and I decided to spend two weeks of our winter break in London. We were both huge music fans: Mark was a Beatles expert and I followed David Bowie, so London was Music Mecca for us. Pictures of me from the trip show a plastic shopping bag always at my side, full of tapes for my Walkman. My headphones were nearly always on, pumping a steady diet of British sounds into my brain. Adam Ant, Gary Numan, Bowie, Rolling Stones. . . the bag was very heavy.
Mark and I knew we were in town for the music, so a lot of time was spent in record stores looking through the local fare, picking up what would be considered imports in the US. While not visiting famous locations like Abbey Road and the alley where the Ziggy Stardust cover was shot, I was on the lookout for some LPs that I had read about in British music magazines, interested in what was new and hip in the Mother Country. These three weren’t the only new vinyl I picked up, but they got the most play, and fully represent my mind during the second semester of my freshman year, January to June 1987.
