Stars Of The Pewter Screen: Trash Movies

James Lorinz and Tony Darrow

They may not have a filmography the size of Fred Williamson but. . . they’re both very memorable smart-asses! The first time I saw these two was in the unforgettable Street Trash. James plays the wise-cracking doorman who works at a restaurant which happens to be a front for mob boss “Nick Duran,” played by Darrow. Street Trash just may be the best filth ever made. It’s a movie that has everything you could ever want to see in a trashy film, but these two clearly have the most memorable dialogue in the entire film. James has an unforgettable Brooklyn accent, as does Tony, but Tony has the Italian Mafioso-drawl for emphasis.

James wrote a small feature called Swirlee (about a lonely human ice-cream cone who wants to commit suicide by melting. . . starring himself, Darrow, and David Caruso). I was fortunate to see a screening of Swirlee at a Cinema Wasteland Expo in Cleveland two years ago and it needs to be made in a full-length! I’d be the first to buy it! I laughed so hard I almost shit myself! Lorinz and Darrow also teamed up for another film called Who Do I Gotta Kill? which is chock-full of some of the best zingers ever written (and it features a really ridiculous sex scene between Lorinz and then-unknown Sandra Bullock). I’ve seen both actors show up in various other things: Tony was in an episode of Law & Order, and James starred in another trashy and unforgettable film called Frankenhooker, as well as minor roles in more high profile stuff like King of New York, NYPD Blue, Last Exit To Brooklyn, and The Jerky Boys. These two need to team up again in the future.

Marc Gregory

This guy was very pretty, Italian, and has unfortunately, vanished off the face of the fucking earth! He got his start in the aforementioned film 1990: The Bronx Warriors with the lead role of the strutting sewer rat aptly named “Trash.” He was the only survivor from that film, and that led to the sequel Escape From The Bronx. (FYI, both films are fabulous!) These two films were both directed by the maestro Enzo G. Castellari, and plot-wise are a cross between The Warriors and Escape From New York. As far as I’m concerned, those are two kick-ass films to be inspired by! Marc was not only eye-candy, but his character was just straight-up cool-as-fuck!

He went on to star in another series of films known as Thunder Warrior (which had two sequels), about a Native American being bullied by bigots and cops. They kill his woman and he knocks them all off, one by one. Its one of those films that makes you smile when some of the motherfuckers get iced in it! His films aren’t easy to find, nor is his filmography lengthy. . . I believe the last film he starred in came out in 1989, and then he disappeared. The Bronx Warriors series is definitely a must-see, but if you can find anything else with him in it, give it a shot!

Ned Manning

I’ve only seen this guy in one film: the fucking awesome Aussie classic Dead End Drive-In. He plays the lead character of “Jimmy” aka “Crabs,” and does it surprisingly well for a trashy film! I wish I had more to say about him, but most of his filmography consists of Australian TV shows I’ve never seen. Despite my limited knowledge of this guy, he kicked ass as “Crabs,” and Dead End Drive-In is mandatory trash film viewing!
