Allie Hughes is a singer-songwriter-musician from Toronto, Ontario, but those three words seem completely inadequate when describing her rather unique, original, and eclectic sound. Though there are only four songs on her debut EP, they are incredibly engaging, veering from theatrical to power pop, and from avant garde to introspective. And everywhere in between. I caught up with Ms. Hughes to find out what it is that inspires her and where she is headed next.

whatever this is

If you haven’t yet heard Ruby Coast, now is your chance! I caught them last November (at the Meligrove Band‘s Shimmering Lights release party) and their live set is exuberant indeed.

Their new album Whatever This Is, is now available as a free download on their Bandcamp site.

Check out their tour dates while you’re at it. They play at The Brass Taps in Guelph on March 3 so you’ve got plenty of time to memorize the lyrics before the show.

You can follow Ruby Coast on Facebook to keep up with all the latest news.

Ruby Coast are a five-piece band from Aurora, ON. They’ve been around since 2006, released an EP in 2008 called Projectable Collections, and toured with bands like Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club, and Ra Ra Riot, in addition to Toronto’s own Born Ruffians.

The band wrote and recorded their first full-length album this spring with Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade), and Brian Paulson (Wilco, Dinosaur Jr., Beck). It won’t be out until 2011, but don’t be sad: you can listen to a couple of tracks on their MySpace page now.
