The Stanley Hotel Ghost Tour

I recently spent a few days in Colorado in and around the Rocky Mountain National Park area, specifically in a lovely area called Estes Park. It’s a small resort-like place northwest of both Denver and Boulder, and even though its considered to be at the foothills of the Rockies, the elevation is almost double to that of Denver. (And considering I live in Cleveland where there are no mountains, this was a major difference in altitude!)

Coisa Ruim: Portugal Does Horror

Published on September 29th, 2010 in: Halloween, Horror, Movie Reviews, Movies |

Coisa Ruim (a.k.a. Bad Blood) is a Portuguese supernatural drama. It’s not Brazilian-Portuguese, but an actual Portuguese film. I make note of that because there are very few Portuguese films to actually make it to DVD, especially in the horror genre. That’s the only reason I stumbled upon it; it was one of the only Portuguese films I could find!

HTRK, Marry Me Tonight: In Memory Of Sean Stewart

At the end of 2009, I stumbled upon an Australian band known as HTRK (pronounced “Hate Rock”). Their name was linked to the late great Rowland S. Howard, and I had to figure out what the connection was (this was before Rowland had passed. . . R.I.P. RSH!)

HTRK were linked to a few musical icons other than Rowland, all part of a corps of musicians hailing from Melbourne, Australia. The most direct link is to The Devastations. HTRK Singer Jonnine Standish is married to The Devastations’ Conrad Standish, and the matrimony doesn’t end there; the other members of HTRK (Nigel Yang and Sean Stewart) were involved with the Devastations musically as well.

“In Dublin’s Fair City. . . where things cost a lot of money. . . but you can set your eyes on sweet Molly Malone (for free). . . ”
—Sung in the style of the old traditional Irish song, “Cockles & Mussels”

Dublin, the capital city of Ireland, is quite a charming place, but it can be expensive. However, if you play your cards right (and do some thorough research), it doesn’t have to be.

Gavin Friday: Thief of My Heart

I remember it like it was yesterday. It had to have been the end of 1991 as I was still in tenth grade, and I remember there being snow on the ground. It was probably shortly after Christmas, because I can’t recall having enough money to buy more than one album at a time; even if they were used & in the bargain bin, I still rarely had over $10 on me at any given time. I usually starved myself in high school by not spending at least some of my lunch money just so I could buy whatever music I could, because I had priorities.

Rowland S. Howard 1959-2009

I had recently paid my respects towards Rowland S. Howard’s latest album, Pop Crimes. . . as it was my favorite record of 2009 (and probably one of my favorite albums of the entire decade!) With reluctance I need to pay my respects in the way I wish I never had to, but. . . Rowland has unfortunately passed away.

Best Of 2009—Albums: By Julie Finley

gemma ray lights out zoltar

This year was actually a MUCH better year than last year, in regards to album releases. Lots of anticipated stuff (at least for moi) came out, and made me quite positive and hopeful. Last year I was starting to wonder why I still bothered to pay attention, but this year made me bite my tongue. The only thing this year lacked regarding music? There weren’t enough concerts worthy of attendance; it seems those who released stuff that I liked didn’t play anywhere I could get to!

Cinema Wasteland Movie And Memorabilia Expo 2009: Cleveland

Published on November 29th, 2009 in: Conventions/Expos, Issues, Movies, Underground/Cult |

By Julie Finley

Cinema Wasteland Movie And Memorabilia Expo is a bi-annual film convention that typically takes place during April and October in the Cleveland, Ohio Metro area. It’s put on by Cinema Wasteland, a mail order video service. The event started in 2000 as a response to the banality of most film conventions and trade shows. The idea was to combine the more interesting elements of this niche circuit, which would be: film screenings (mainly horror, indie, B-movie, or newer and older cult films); industry “special guests” (typically actors and crew from various films); and vendors selling films and memorabilia. It also has a masquerade element to it (as in, costumes are definitely encouraged). The idea was to be more engaging than just table after table of people selling crap.

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds, Dracula Boots

Kid Congo Powers (a.k.a. Brian Tristan) has been around. . . and around! If you know the name, you know his pedigree! If you are reading this, you probably dig at least one of the following: The Cramps, The Gun Club, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Congo Norvell, Knoxville Girls, Kid & Khan, Fur Bible, Botanica, Mark Eitzel, The Divine Horsemen, The Angels of Light, Die Haut, etc. (or possibly all of them). He’s sort of a renegade musician—he shows up in a lot of things—but in the past few years, he’s finally doing his own thing, where he’s the focus.

Bat For Lashes, Two Suns

I’d heard of Bat For Lashes last year, and the name didn’t grab me, so I ignored it. I had inadvertently absorbed the info that the act was critically acclaimed. Big Deal, right? So when I was on vacation earlier this year in Dublin, I saw promo posters in almost all of the record stores I went into. . . still ignored it!
