My Five Favorite Controversial and Hilarious Pop Culture Moments on TV

Posted in Music, Oh No You Didn't, Television, Top Five Lists |

By Ann Clarke

I rarely care about what the famous (and the infamous) do that stirs up controversy or awkwardness . . . but sometimes that shit is just hilarious! I am not talking about “Reality TV” either; I’m talking about the stuff that you weren’t really expecting—but were NOT surprised once it happened—and over which you had a good laugh. There have been plenty of moments like this in pop culture, but I’m only going to list the ones that I could watch over and over again and still laugh at hysterically. In fact, some of these things get funnier upon multiple viewings!

The Jesus Lizard, CLUB DVD

jesus lizard club

Filmed in Nashville in July of 2009, this DVD is a one-night glimpse into what was a reunion-ish tour that I really wish I’d had a chance at seeing (no shows came anywhere near me). But luckily someone had the sense to capture it (and capture it well, I might add!)

I had seen Jesus Lizard live footage before, but regrettably I have never seen them live. I had a good idea of what to expect, and what is captured on this DVD lives up to my expectations.

see my friends CD

I truly love and adore Ray Davies—always have, always will—but his latest album See My Friends, wherein he collaborates with a roster of some popular musicians is rather . . . intolerable!

Wild Beasts, Smother

I was quite fond of last year’s release by Wild BeastsTwo Dancers—so I was quite surprised that they had a brand new album out so quickly thereafter. So does Smother hold up to its predecessor? The short response is: Yes, it does!

My Top Five Favorite Sci-Fi Films

Posted in Climb Onto The Nearest Star, Films, Science Fiction, Staff Picks, Top Five Lists |

By Ann Clarke

I’ll be honest; I’m not that crazy about most science-fiction films. If I like them at all, it’s when they have an underlying theme about some sort of society based in the future, but with a skewed slant that isn’t even typical of a sci-fi film! I’m not into Star Wars, if that gives you any idea of what you wont be seeing in my list.

Alien 2: On Earth

Midnight Legacy films, for some fucked-up reason only known to them, felt the need to re-release the Italian film known as Alien 2 Sulla Terra. That translates to Alien 2: On Earth. After wasting 84.25 minutes of my life watching this . . . I have to wonder why they even went through the trouble.

Mike DeStefano: 1967-2011

I absolutely did NOT want to have to write another article involving the passing of anyone, but unfortunately . . . I am finding myself doing this once again.

Mike DeStefano, a truly gifted comic, has died. He passed away on March 6, 2011 from an apparent heart attack. He was only 44 years old.

This sucks.

Best Of 2010: Ann Clarke

greiegutfraktion

2010 was ridiculously limp regarding any newly released tangible media; I enjoyed older stuff much more. There were plenty of mediocre bands with new albums, boring reunion tours, and remakes of films . . . and I can’t even comment on books because the only ones I ever bother to read anymore are reference materials (travel, art, or kitschy humor).

However, here is some 2010 entertainment that I did enjoy!

The Stanley Hotel Ghost Tour

Posted in Halloween, Horror, Travel |

By Ann Clarke

I recently spent a few days in Colorado in and around the Rocky Mountain National Park area, specifically in a lovely area called Estes Park. It’s a small resort-like place northwest of both Denver and Boulder, and even though its considered to be at the foothills of the Rockies, the elevation is almost double to that of Denver. (And considering I live in Cleveland where there are no mountains, this was a major difference in altitude!)

Coisa Ruim: Portugal Does Horror

Posted in Films, Halloween, Horror |

By Ann Clarke

Coisa Ruim (a.k.a. Bad Blood) is a Portuguese supernatural drama. It’s not Brazilian-Portuguese, but an actual Portuguese film. I make note of that because there are very few Portuguese films to actually make it to DVD, especially in the horror genre. That’s the only reason I stumbled upon it; it was one of the only Portuguese films I could find!
