Hungry For Love, Part Four: More Awesomely Bad Music Videos From Around The Globe

Turquoise Days, “Grey Skies” (1984; Jersey, Channel Islands)
This particular song is a prime example of the (now often duplicated) original 1980s-era minimalist-synth style; its memorable hook makes this video worth watching. Although claiming to be “fresh and exciting new music,” this obscure video is actually brutally sullen and dark.

Streep, “Strangers in the Night” (1989, Germany)
I have to admit, this song is not particularly memorable, but what makes this video special are the singer’s ridiculous facial expressions, especially when going for those hard to reach notes. Really, Streep could win an academy award for contortion.

Fiat Lux, “Secrets” (1984, England)
This is a slow song, which I normally wouldn’t include in a collection like this because of my short attention span. But although the video quality is pretty poor, this video is still quite good, if by good you mean bizarre and funny! The serious and emotional nature of the tune built up during the Renaissance Faire introduction is undercut by the three painted floating heads that appear at 1:06.

Peter Schilling, “Völlig losgelöst (Major Tom)” (1983, Germany)
Did you know that the English-language version of the hit song “Major Tom” is not the original? Here is the video in the original German with a cheesy video to boot. Still can’t get enough Major Tom? Try the 2011 William Shatner tone-deaf cover version on for size! (Sorry, there is no official video, audio only.)

Форум, “Давайте созвонимся (Let us call each other)” (1985, USSR)
Did you know that the minimal wave style was also popular in the Soviet Union, of all places? Here is the video, along with the unfortunate 2008 remake. Still need more Форум? Here’s another one!
