ACT 3

Cast and Characters:
Greta Pistaceci as Gertrude the Duck
Ergo Phizmiz as a Residents Spokesperson

[Please note that the duck’s questions are in Morse code as the duck communicates by tapping its bill against a hard surface. For ease of reading, the questions are also translated into plain text below.]

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. -.– .-. . — .- .. -. .- -. — -. -.– — — ..- … ..–.. .– …. -.– …. .. -.. . -… . …. .. -. -.. .- — .- … -.- ..–.. [Why remain anonymous? Why hide behind a mask?]

Residents Spokesperson: It’s far preferable to hiding behind a rock.

Gertrude the Duck: -.. — -.– — ..- ..-. . ..-.. – …. .- – .– …. — -.– — ..- .- .-. . – — — – …. . .-. … .– — ..- .-.. -.. –. . – .. -. – …. . .– .- -.– — ..-. -.– — ..- .-. .- .-. – ..–.. -.. — . … .. – — .- – – . .-. ..–.. [Do you feel that who you are to others would get in the way of your art? Does it matter?]

Residents Spokesperson: If they knew that I was really Mike Tyson it may affect the judgment on my work, yes.

[Does anonymity mean that you are freer to create without fear of judgment? Do you find it’s liberating, and that you are able to say and do things that you would not be able to say and do otherwise?]

Residents Spokesperson: One is always judged, whether a big eye or an entire face. I’d say and do the same if I had every human feature. As it is I’m just an eye in a dinner suit. But there are worse things one could be.

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. .- – .– — ..- .-.. -.. -.– — ..- … .- -.– .. ..-. .. – — .-.. -.. -.– — ..- – …. .- – -.– — ..- .-. — ..- – .–. ..- – -. — .– –..– .- … — .–. .–. — … . -.. – — – …. .- – — ..-. -.– — ..- .-. . .- .-. .-.. -.– -.-. .- .-. . ..-. –..– .. … -.. .. … .- .–. .–. — .. -. – .. -. –. – …. .- – -.– — ..- .- .-. . .- .–. .- .-.. . … …. .- -.. — .– — ..-. .– …. .- – -.– — ..- .– . .-. . ..–.. [What would you say if I told you that your output now, as opposed to that of your early career, is disappointing—that you are a pale shadow of what you were?]

Residents Spokesperson: I’d say GOOD. One can’t continue to please the same people for decade after decade. One would be Paul Weller, surely?

Gertrude the Duck: .-. .- ..- … . -.– — ..- .-. -.-. ..- .-. .-. . -. – — ..- – .–. ..- – .. … .–. .-. — -… .- -… .-.. -.– . -..- .- -.-. – .-.. -.– .– …. .- – -.– — ..- .– .- -. – .. – – — -… . .- -. -.. -.– — ..- .-. .–. . .-. … — -. .- — . .- -. … – …. .- – -.– — ..- .- .-. . .- -… .-.. . – — -.. — .– …. .- – -.– — ..- .– .- -. – .– .. – …. .. – .– …. . – …. . .-. .–. . — .–. .-.. . .-.. .. -.- . — . .- .–. .–. .-. — …- . — .-. -. — – — .-. — .- -.– -… . .. – … – …. . — .–. .–. — … .. – . .-.-.- -.– — ..- …. .- …- . -… . -.-. — — . – .-. .- .–. .–. . -.. -… -.– -.– — ..- .-. .–. . .-. … — -. .- –..– .- … .-.. .- …- . – — .. – .-.-.- -.– — ..- .-. .–. . .-. … — -. .- …. .- … -… . -.-. — — . .- -. — – …. . .-. .. -.. . -. – .. – -.– –..– .– …. .. -.-. …. –..– .. -. .- -.. -.. .. – .. — -. – — -.– — ..- .-. . …- . .-. -.– -.. .- -.– — -. . –..– -.– — ..- …. .- …- . – — -.- . . .–. ..- .–. .- -. -.. .–. .-. — – . -.-. – –..– .- -. -.. .– …. .. -.-. …. .-.. .. — .. – … -.– — ..- .-. -.-. .-. . .- – .. …- . ..-. .-. . .-.. — — .-.-.- -.. .. … -.-. ..- … … [In a way, this might tie in with the identity thing: you wouldn’t care, because your current output is probably exactly what you want it to be and your persona means that you are able to do what you want with it whether people like me approve or not . . . or maybe it’s the opposite. You have become trapped by your persona, a slave to it. Your persona has become another identity, which, in addition to your everyday one, you have to keep up and protect, and which limits your creative freedom. Discuss . . .]

Residents Spokesperson: It’s more interesting to be a slave to a persona or two, rather than simply having one personality. How tedious life would be if I were only one person. Far more fun to be two or three. If only you knew about my other disguises. (I’ll let you know.—Helena Bonham-Carter. Oh yes.)

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. .- – -.- .. -. -.. … — ..-. – …. .. -. –. … .– — ..- .-.. -.. -.– — ..- -. — – – .- .-.. -.- .- -… — ..- – — .-. -.. — — .-. -.-. .-. . .- – . –..– .- … -.– — ..- .-. … . .-.. …- . … ..–.. [What kinds of things would you not talk about or do or create, as yourselves?]

Residents Spokesperson: EVERYTHING.

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. .- – -.-. — -. … – .. – ..- – . … .–. — .–. — ..- … .. -.-. ..–.. [What constitutes pop music?]

Residents Spokesperson: A good hook, or a line, as long as it’s not a sinker.

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. .- – -.-. — -. … – .. – ..- – . … .- –. — — -.. … — -. –. ..–.. [What constitutes a good song?]

Residents Spokesperson: See above.

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. .- – -.-. — -. … – .. – ..- – . … .- .-. – ..–.. [What constitutes art?]

Residents Spokesperson: Ask Rolf Harris.

Gertrude the Duck: .– …. -.– ..–.. ..–.. ..–.. ..–.. ..–.. ..–.. [Why??????]

Residents Spokesperson: JUST FUCKING BECAUSE!
