On our way to a showing of an animated Jonah Hex short, it struck me how pleasant it was to just wander the halls of the convention center. In addition to seeing the attendees in costumes, it’s so satisfying to see the faces of people who are in their happy place.

The Jonah Hex short was followed by a panel that included the author, Joe R. Lansdale, and the voice of Hex, Thomas Jane. Jane, who was in fine form, eating fries and making wry comments, acknowledged that his well-publicized photo as the scarred Western hero led to his consideration as the voice of Hex, making the producers think of him in the role. Lansdale thoroughly enjoyed the finished short and thought that Jane was perfect for the role, though the Texan in him could not help mentioning that two times the characters got off the wrong side of the horse.

The most controversial part of the Q&A came when Jane was asked if he’d consider a Punisher sequel. “I hit the eject button on the Punisher sequel,” he stated forcefully, “and it saved my career. It’s my job to say no to crap.” An obvious fan of the original material, Jane felt that the “real Punisher film” has not yet been made, but that he’d certainly be interested in a version that was faithful to the source.

Returning to Artist’s Alley, I was very pleased to find that Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett‘s book Boilerplate had sold out, and that they were taking orders for signed copies to be mailed out after Con. It was good to see the pair realizing some well-deserved success after ten years of a Victorian-era robot.

Somehow, it was suddenly seven o’clock and the convention floor was closing. Walking to dinner along the waterside, I saw artist Michael Zulli dining with friends, and I waved to him in recognition. He gave me a nod and a smile, and life was good. Somehow again, I’m up past midnight, and the last day of Comic-Con is approaching. I’m tired, but still I wish there was more time left. Final installment tomorrow!
