13-malibooz

13. The Malibooz, “Summertime News” (from Malibooz Rule!, 1981)
In 1964, John Zambetti and Walter Egan formed the surf-happy, regionally successful Malibooz in the unlikely setting of New York. Seventeen years and several Egan solo records later, they regrouped in LA and recorded their first full-length, with the assistance of Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsay Buckingham and Dean Torrance of Jan & Dean.

14-saroltazalatnay

14. Sarolta Zalatnay, “Itt A Nyar (Here In The Summer)” (1970; reissued on Sarolta Zalatnay, 2007)
Notorious in her homeland, Hungarian sex symbol Sarolta Zalatnay has lead a very interesting life. Her career began when she placed second in the national Dance Song Contest in 1966; she returned the following year, with native rock band Omega, and took the top prize. In addition to recording ten albums, Zalatnay also made several film appearances and, at the behest of her porn-director husband, became the oldest woman to ever pose in Hungarian Playboy at the age of 54. Recently, Sarolta served two years in prison for fraud!

15-harmonygrass

15. Harmony Grass, “Summer Dreaming” (rarity, 1967?; issued on This Is Us, 2003)
A brief, bright flicker on the late ’60s UK pop scene, Harmony Grass included former members of Tony Rivers and The Castaways. Their lone album, This Is Us, included the Top 30 single “Move in a Little Closer Baby”. This warm-weather tune is a bonus track from its CD reissue, and clearly evidences Rivers’ love of the Beach Boys.

16-fanny

16. Fanny, “Summer Song” (from Mother’s Pride, 1973)
We’re going to hand this one over to a Mr. Bowie: “One of the most important female bands in American rock has been buried without a trace. And that is Fanny. They were one of the finest fucking rock bands of their time. . . They were extraordinary. They wrote everything, they played like motherfuckers, they were just colossal and wonderful, and nobody’s ever mentioned them.” AMEN. Here’s our humble contribution to the rectification of this ridiculous oversight!

17-slade

17. Slade, “Summer Song (Wishing You Were Here)” (Flame soundtrack, 1975)
In the early-to-mid-70s, larger-than-life glam superstars Slade reigned supreme on the UK charts, scoring an incredible seventeen Top 20 hits (six of which went to number one). “Summer Song (Wishing You Were Here)” comes from the soundtrack to the excellent film Flame, which stars Slade as the titular band and gives viewers a raw, intriguing look of the seedier trappings of the biz.
